“The rabbits is so thick out west,” Eugene said across the campfire, “you’ll be runnin’ ‘em over with the wagon. Remember when they told us that?”
In response came a long silence.
“There’s so much game out there, you don’t need to pack no food. Remember when they said that?”
More minutes passed… quietly.
“But it weren’t true, were it? No, siree. Ain’t hardly no game out here at all. In fact, if it weren’t fer you, pardner, I’d’ve starved. I’m much obliged.”
The rest of the journey would be lonesome, Eugene knew, but at least his belly was full.
