Sunlight bounced off the glass, stabbing Jane’s eyes as it tumbled end over end before splashing into the sea. The message on the crisp white paper was simple:
Bring Him Back.
The sea complied. Gentle waves carried chunks of the lost ship to shore. Harold’s head slowly rose above them. Ragged clothes and bloated tissue slowly lurched towards her, one arm swinging lifeless at his side. Mangled feet sent sprays of glittering water into the air.
Jane’s tears of joy were short-lived. More heads appeared among the debris, their milky eyes locked on her as they stumbled towards the shore.
