I thought I would be happy when the doctors finally gave a name to what was wrong with me. Phantom pain, they called it. Pain from a missing limb that continued to cry out that something was wrong.
I was confused. I had never had an amputation. The pain had simply started one day and grown ever since.
True, they explained, which was what made my case so rare. They had poked around my medical history, asked my mother a few questions. Apparently, I had absorbed my twin in the womb.
And he was crying out that something was wrong.
