Paul Warmerdam is a Dutch-American with decades of experience writing stories, who only recently decided to start submitting them. He lives in the Netherlands, where there’s plenty of rainy hours shut indoors with a story in mind.
What book from your childhood do you remember the best? Why?
If we’re really talking about childhood then it would have to be De Griezelbus by Paul van Loon from here in the Netherlands. I just looked him up and realized he’s still going strong. He writes horror stories exclusively for children, citing influences like H. P. Lovecraft. I hope they get translated some day.
What’s your writing Kryptonite?
Time. On top of all the usual stuff, I’m renovating a house that will celebrate its 100th birthday soon. It’s been a project of several years and the end is in sight. I’m looking forward to all the extra hours I’ll get to spend on stories.
What sparked the idea for this book?
It was an old idea. Stories about the living dead often involve a cursed existence in one way and yet offer new freedoms as well, like immortality. For us, experiencing outer space firsthand can be a terrifying thought. Would those who rise from the grave be liberated from this fear?
Why did you choose the first moon landing as the setting of this book?
Actually, it was because the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission was coming up. I submitted this story just a week before, hoping it would get reviewed on the very day.
How did you come up with the stars/MCs of this book?
A story this size doesn’t need too many of them, but I did need to convey opposing views on a past tragedy. Some people can leave it in the past and propel themselves beyond it, others dwell and find themselves to be consumed by it. That’s Kris and Dirk for you, respectively.
What’s brewing? What projects are you working on?v
I actually am literally brewing at the moment: a lagered bock/IPA, a Belgian-style blond, two types of Jonagold cider, and a Conference perry. Let me know if you’re ever thirsty and in the area.

Hades 11 by Paul Warmerdam
/by Black Hare PressThere are few paths history could have taken that leads humanity to set foot on the Moon. One of the roads paved by time, an intersection avoided over fifty years ago now, leads to a different outcome of the arms race on rocket fuel than the one we remember.
