As the carnival moves from town to town, murdered women lead police to its most disturbing attraction.
At Big Jim Morgan’s Thrills & Chills Amusements, horror is entertainment—until women begin turning up dead.
Zackary “Wooly” Woolsey has spent his life among the carnival’s freaks, roustabouts and grifters. A gifted but solitary puppeteer, he creates macabre characters, speaks to them as though they are his children and loses himself in the violent stories they perform. When his beloved Count Dracula puppet is found brutally destroyed, Wooly’s fragile state begins to deteriorate.
Then a woman is discovered tortured and strangled after the carnival leaves town. When another woman is murdered at its next stop, the similarities are impossible to ignore.
Sven “Golly” Larsen, a psychology graduate seeking adventure on the midway, has become Wooly’s friend, pupil and closest confidant. But Wooly suffers disturbing gaps in his memory. His puppets act out vicious fantasies. And among his belongings is something that could connect him to the killings.
As detectives close in, evidence mounts, blurring the line between gruesome performance and bloodshed. The most horrifying act may be yet to come.
Beneath the carnival’s shabby glamour, the line between performance and murder is vanishing—and the most terrifying attraction may be the Puppet Master himself.
