Spell for the Dead
by Belinda Brady
“The Spell for the Dead only works on Halloween, when spirits are earthbound.” My friend Judith states sitting beside me, clutching a photo of her deceased dog, Bronx. This spell supposedly raised the dead and Judith insisted I help cast it.
“We’ll soon know,” I reply as we hold hands and chant the incantation.
A growl interrupts us as a disheveled Bronx enters the room.
“Bro—” I stammer as the dog lunges at my throat, all teeth and claws, knocking me over in a pool of blood.
Judith leans over me, a smirk on her face. “Looks like it works.”

Hand

“Fancy a drink?” Dave asks.
“I’m teleconferencing with head office soon, so not tonight,” Jillian replies.
“Don’t work too hard then.” He smiles, exiting the gazebo with a laugh.
The discovery of a mummy at the dig site was unexpected and moving it was complicated, requiring daily overtime from an exhausted Jillian.
She slumps back in her chair, closing her eyes briefly. Movement outside the gazebo makes her jump, just as a hand closes around her throat.
Jillian wakes in darkness, underneath something dusty and rotting. Horrified, she realises she’s in the mummy’s coffin.
That same hand strangles her screams.

Learn
by Belinda Brady
“Shapeshifters? Why are you reading about them? They’re not real,” my childhood friend, Joshua, scoffs.
“You know me. I’m always learning something new,” I reply, glancing at the book on my table.
Like how I had learned Joshua was sleeping with my wife. That was new.
“You learn about dumb stuff, man,” Joshua laughs, getting a beer from the fridge.
The bottle shatters to the floor when he turns around and faces himself.
“You could learn a thing or two, man. Like how to stay away from a friend’s wife,” I seethe, lunging forward.
I never did get a reply.
