Nice Night for a Barbeque

by Neen Cohen

Drips of fat dropped through the barbeque grill and sent flames up into the darkening sky.

“Here you go, mate.” James stepped onto the patio and handed Mike a cool beer.

“Dinner won’t be long.” The plate hissed as James put onion on to fry.

“I’ll go tell the girls.” Mike disappeared inside the house again.

James opened the Tupperware container and gripped the delicate wings between thumb and forefinger.

The fairy’s scream sounded like tinkling glass windchimes as he pulled the sheer material from the body.

She sizzled as she landed on the grill beside her sisters’ unrecognisable bodies.

Bloody Mary

She fluttered her bright blue eyes in the lights of the nightclub, taking the drink from his over-eager hands.

“Now leave.”

He turned, eyebrows knitting. Tomorrow he would wonder where all the money went with no hangover to show for it.

“You make us look bad.” Teara shook her head despite her ruby red smile.

“We are bad, T. Still…looking sweet and innocent isn’t our fault.”

“It will catch up, one day.”

“Fantastic. I can’t wait for the next challenge.”

She leaned forward, her cleavage bringing the next victim closer.

Her nails slit through his throat, flavouring the drink.

YEAR TWO

Thanks, Pop Culture

by Neen Cohen

“You gunna sparkle in the sunlight?” She laughed and I smiled as we waltz back to her place.

Pop culture had made hunting so much easier. And a lot more fun.

“May I?”

“Oh, of course.” She giggles, believing the act “come on in.”

I step in and watch her as she reveals her flesh.

Her smile slips; from eyes, and then lips. Horror freezes her as she takes in the twisted veins of my body.

I lick her skin, sending poison to freeze her permanently.

Her eyes her only means of communication. I bask in the fear for days.
