Beautiful, heartfelt poetry from international poets
Beautiful, heartfelt poetry from international poets
Christmas tomorrow, we need to make space for the family. They had planned a move to Australia; I blamed our son, Mary blamed the daughter-in-law. We would never see the grandchildren again. It wasn’t fair. We’d be just another lonely, miserable old couple despite all our years of help and support.
It’s funny how if you think about something long enough, anything is possible. So we prepared, went on an adult education course, “Taxidermy for the Family”. Anyway, I think we should get them out early this year, so they are sitting round the table when we get up tomorrow.

Gerry was asleep. His left eyeball pulsed and popped itself out of its socket and slithered onto the floor, heading for the door. It slithered along the hallway and out through the cat flap. Cybertronic Systems organs had state of the art neuro-connect functionality hence the searing pain in Gerry’s head, causing him to scream and tear at his face in agony. Outside, his cat licked aqueous humour from its paws and padded off satisfied, tail flicking the air.
When they said there were sometimes rejection issues, Gerry assumed he might be doing the rejecting, not the other way round.

Every day as darkness falls and the day’s echoes falter to silence, my existence slips further away. Primordial spores now infect my mind, connecting to a past that isn’t mine.
Complex toxins cling to every moist membrane, burning my guts as my soul slowly rots.
Soon I will forget the afternoon I dozed too long amongst ancient trees, waking covered with a fine layer of pale filaments, brushing them off too late.
Unearthly enzymes dissolve and digest my being, fusing with my DNA. Before long I will be gone. It will become me completely, ready to join with you all.

Three tides washed over me before you covered me in tar.
But still I see you sail by, laughing at me in my cage above the Thames.
You see my empty eye sockets, the strips of putrefying flesh, the wind jerking my bones when there is no wind.
A final resting place?
No, I’m still here, dreaming of Port-au-Prince, my woman, and my gold.
I see you sail by, and I am laughing. Voodoo promised I would live forever, and so I am.
I drip contagion into the water you all drink—my pestilence will be in your city forever.
