Can’t Let Go

by Sophie Wagner

Shhh,” I pleaded, holding my grandmother’s hand as she contorted in pain. “You’re safe with me.”

Hatred filled her eyes as I carved them out, quickly stuffing them into the holes I had made in the mannequin’s face.

“I know it’s not the body type you wanted.” I grunted, prying open her ribcage to transfer her heart. “But this was all I could scrounge up. The runes won’t be noticeable under your clothes, either.”

As I began to chant, the candles in her hospital room flickered, her chest lurched upward and a wispy vapour emerged, floating toward her new body.

Birth

by Sophie Wagner

Men and women alike writhed in pain on the ground of the birthing ward as babies slithered between them, smearing black goo everywhere.

Monica screamed in agony as her arm pulsated, the purple gargantuan pouch attached to it nearly bursting. The man beside her was already cold, despite his birthing-sack popping moments ago. A good thing; he would’ve died from the skinning, anyway. The parasite looks like you already, but it craves warmth and fresh flesh is best.

As the world faded to black, Monica saw her old colleague being injected with the disease.

Something in his stomach began wriggling.

Always Watching

by Sophie Wagner

As he rotted away, cheeks sallow, smile bloody, dreams of sugarplums died. Even magic couldn’t fix him.

“Good morning!” piped a sing-song voice from the speakers in the padded room. Santa shot to his feet, camera’s following his every move.

“Please!” he screamed. “I can’t take this anymore. Let me go!”

Tsk, tsk,” came the voice. “Don’t like being constantly watched? How’s it make you feel?

“I want to die!” Santa shrieked.

“That’s not very jolly…” the voice said. “Let’s try again tomorrow.” With that, he turned off the lights and left Santa in the dark, the cameras always watching.

A Zombie’s Guide to Alcoholism

by Sophie Wagner

I was bored; what can I say? Not like there’s anyone to judge me besides Martin, and he doesn’t do much.

The first day I ran out of realistic solutions to cure him of the zombie virus, I injected him with orange juice. No result. Same with pineapple juice. However, vodka might do the trick.

At first, he was still. Then, he hurtled towards the desk and began to bash out his brains until they joined him on the floor.

Interesting. Either I’m going to need an ocean of vodka to save myself, or I’ll just follow in his footsteps.

Broken Things

by Sophie Wagner

“Trash, trash, trash,” Garret grumbled as he sifted through the remains of the abandoned campsite.

Marcus grunted in response, pausing once to grimace as he pulled a bloody rag free from his pile.

“Everything’s broken, man. Let’s go, this place is a dump,” he groaned. He waited for Garret’s response, but only a low laugh rustled through the trees.

“Broken?” the wind croaked. “And what are you, little scavenger?”

Marcus screamed as he was thrown to the ground, invisible hands bludgeoning him until his bones splintered and his eyes went empty; just another broken thing.

Then, the wind went quiet.

Re-Election

by Sophie Wagner

“Happy anniversary,” Dalin whispered, removing her blindfold.

Maia frowned as she stared at the open senior yearbook he had placed in her hands and the nomination page stared back; the class clown, the fashionista, and worst of all, the cutest couple. Maia had been certain that she and Dalin would win, but Stacy and Johnny always beat them.

However, when she looked again, she noticed that Stacy and Johnny’s faces had been crossed out with x’s.

Dalin smirked at her, then opened their bedroom door, revealing both of them bound and bloody.

“Happy anniversary,” he whispered, handing her a knife.

Near Miss

by Sophie Wagner

Blindfolded and arms outstretched, he turned to the crowd and asked for a volunteer. No one moved.

After a moment, a clown stepped into the crowd and hauled a sobbing Andrew to his feet.

“Please don’t make me,” Andrew begged.

“Don’t worry, he never misses,” the clown replied.

He dragged him to centre stage, tied him to a board, then stepped back and handed the blindfolded man a knife.

Quickly, he spun around, then let the knife fly from his hand. With a thud, it stuck in Andrew’s heart. Not missing a beat, the carny folk descended upon their meal.

Maybe Next Year

by Sophie Wagner

“What do you think, Stephen? Have we been good this year?”

“For his sake,” he said, “let’s hope so.”

Santa lay spread eagle atop a pile of coal, held in place by candy canes that were shoved through his forearms, his one remaining eye still twinkling.

Walter scanned both lists, then shook his head sadly. “Another year, another Christmas on the naughty list. Care to guess what we won?”

He grabbed Santa’s sack and shook another pound of coal onto the pile.

“Such a shame,” said Stephen, pouring lighting fluid over the pyre and striking a match. “Maybe next year?”

Halloween at the Morrison’s

by Sophie Wagner

In Mateo’s opinion, Halloween was the best time of the year. On decorating day, his family would carve, hang skeletons and Mother would make meat pies.

Sadly, this year they started without him.

When he arrived home, Morrie was already carving a lopsided smile into a decapitated head. In the kitchen, Mother was busy chopping the rest of the body. He could already smell the pies in the oven.

“Sorry to start without you,” his dad called. “But you can join your brother, if you want.”

Mateo advanced on the bound man in the corner.

“Don’t mind if I do.”

Crawl

by Sophie Wagner

“Please!” the hysterical mother shrieked. “You have to help her, she’s going to die!”

“Mrs,” the doctor replied. “We are doing everything we can. We’ve never seen anything like this before.”

The girl who sat in front of them, once a healthy athlete, was now frail and almost transparent. Her hair was slicked with sweat from a fever that you could feel from halfway across the room. And worst of all, black lines traced up and down her veins.

Suddenly she began to convulse and fell to the floor. A dark shape appeared under her skin.

It began to crawl.
